One of the ways ARC, Inc. promotes equity and justice is by providing opportunities for professional development and community building through our Training and Education Program. We host a variety of free learning opportunities to help eliminate as many barriers as possible to defenders receiving the high-quality knowledge and skills needed to effectively represent individuals from underserved communities and are at risk of unjust outcomes.

Opportunities for Learning
- Webinar Series - This series is the original piece of our virtual programming, and has covered topics such as record collection, intellectual disability, trauma, the role of race in our cases, and many more. Generally, these sessions will be offered one Tuesday each month from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Eastern via Zoom. Register here.
- Lunch and Learn Series - Introduced to our Training and Education Program in January 2022, this series is designed to give participants the opportunity to revisit previous sessions to refresh their knowledge, catch up on what they missed, and take a deeper dive into topics that are difficult to cover in just one 90-minute session. Participants will be asked to watch a video of a past webinar ahead of each session. They will be able to access that video and supporting materials via Perusall, a community learning platform where members of the group can respond to the materials and each other with comments and questions. Responses will help guide a round-table discussion led by a subject-matter expert. These sessions will be offered one Tuesday each month from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Eastern via Zoom. Register here.
- Ask a Mitigation Specialist - Similar to a helpline, Ask a Mitigation Specialist is a resource for defense practitioners to think through a mitigation challenge or question with two veteran mitigation specialists. Participants receive feedback rooted in best practices and case information remains confidential. Request a virtual 25-minute appointment here.
- Multi-Day Trainings - ARC, Inc. began hosting an annual large-scale mitigation training for practitioners in 2017, with sessions facilitated by renowned experts discussing a variety of topics relevant to mitigation investigation. We now offer two or three-day trainings twice annually in Baltimore, MD and Jacksonville, FL respectively. These trainings will feature new interactive elements designed to give participants the opportunity for hands-on skills practice and peer-to-peer discussion. Our April training is now over, but information regarding our next training will be available soon!
- BYOC Trainings - Bring Your Own Case Trainings are intensive client-centered training designed to provide support and consultation to defense teams working on capital pre-trial, state-level cases. The program consists of plenary sessions followed by small-group brainstorming sessions where participants will have an opportunity to discuss their cases with nationally-recognized experts in capital defense. Participating teams are eligible for continued case consultation with faculty following the training. BYOC training is made possible by Grant No. 2018-CP-BX-K001 awarded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance through the Department of Justice. If you and your defense team colleagues are interested, have one member of your team complete a brief screening form here.
- Virtual Book Club - We began our virtual book club as an opportunity to build community while exploring common themes in mitigation. Virtual book club members participate in one of two small groups that meet to discuss the selected reading. Each meeting is led by a member of ARC, Inc.'s staff. Register here.
