Towards Justice | In today's Baltimore Sun

Executive Director Liz Vartkessian has an oped in today's Baltimore Sun. Inspired by the podcast In the Dark, it reads in part:

Listening to the true crime podcast, In the Dark has been a frustrating experience. Season two, which has been downloaded more than 12 million times, focuses on the case of Curtis Flowers, an inmate on Mississippi’s death row who has maintained his innocence for the last 22 years. What frustrates me is not the podcast itself, which is meticulously reported. It is not even the series of revelations of the ways in which Mr. Flowers’ case was mishandled. What frustrates me is that the attention Mr. Flowers’ experience has received is an aberration. In fact, the most unusual thing about his case is that it has actually received the type of investigation that is theoretically guaranteed to every person facing capital charges. [Read more]

Towards Justice | A Community of Change

In 2015, the J.M. Kaplan Fund changed ARC, Inc.'s trajectory when our Executive Director, Elizabeth Vartkessian, was named one of the inaugural recipients of the J.M.K. Innovation Prize. The Prize embodies the belief that social entrepreneurship can spark transformative change. The early-stage support we received with this award helped us to expand our work, while the resources and expertise provided helped us to thrive as an organization. Just as meaningfully to us, it has made our team part of a community of individuals dedicated to creating change. [Read more]

In Memory of Ledell Lee

Today, we honor the memory of Ledell Lee, the first of four men killed by the state of Arkansas over the past several days. Three weeks ago, I joined our incredible partners at the ACLU and the Innocence Project in the last-minute effort to save Ledell's life. I wrote about what I learned and, just as importantly, what I will now never have the chance to learn about his life.  [Read more]

From Our Executive Director:

Dear friends,

This past week has seen the start of a new era in the U.S., one that is filled with uncertainty.
